Tamil Nadu: Quake felt in Salem district; people left homes in panic

Chennai: People ran out of houses in panic, as an measuring 3.3 on the Richter scale was felt in some parts of district of on Sunday.
 
Indian Meteorological Department sources said the was felt at around 0800 hrs this morning.
 
Salem District Collector Ms Rohini R Bhgajibhakare said there was no damages or casualties  reported because of the quake.
 
The tremors were felt in Mettur, where the dam's level stood at 117 ft and fast filling to its full level of 120 ft, and also at Omalur and Tharamangalam. The tremors lasted about four to five seconds.
 
Panic gripped the people, who ran out of their houses and rushed to open spaces.
 
The Collector urged the people not to get panic and appealed to them not to use elevators and take the stairs to climb down.
 
She also advised the people to stay in open places and avoid standing near congested buildings, hoardings and glass panels.
 
Ms Rohini also appealed to the people to contact the 24 hours toll free helpline 1077 for any assistance. (UNI)
