New Delhi: A five-judge Constitution bench of the Supreme Court, headed by Chief Justice of India (CJI) Jagdish Singh Khehar, today began hearing the pleas challenging the constitutional validity of 'triple talaq', 'nikah halala' among Muslims.

The four other judges of the bench are Justices Kurian Joseph, Rohinton Fali Nariman, and S Abdul Nazeer. While hearing the arguments in the case, the bench observed that it will keep matter limited to the issue, "whether and halala are fundamental to the religion" or not. The apex court observed that it would examine whether the issue of 'triple talaq' is fundamental to religion or not. The top court made it clear that it is not going to hear the issue now. (UNI)
