The Aurangabad Bench of the Bombay High Court has granted permission to the Shirdi Sai Baba Sansthan Trust to provide financial support to veteran actor Sudhir Dalvi, who is currently undergoing treatment for sepsis. Dalvi, 86, is widely revered for his iconic portrayal of Sai Baba in Manoj Kumar’s classic film Shirdi Ke Sai Baba, a role that became inseparable from his identity. The Trust had approached the court seeking approval to offer Rs 11 lakh towards Dalvi’s medical expenses, as earlier directions require it to obtain court permission before incurring such costs.Advocate Anil S. Bajaj, representing the Trust, informed the court that the ad-hoc committee supervising the Trust’s affairs had already decided to extend financial assistance. He pointed out that Dalvi remains beloved for his depiction of Sai Baba. The veteran actor was admitted to Lilavati Hospital in Mumbai for treatment. The Trust received a request on October 30 asking for financial aid of up to Rs 15 lakh for Dalvi’s care.A bench comprising Justices Vibha Kankanwadi and Hiten Venegaonkar directed the Trust to submit an affidavit detailing Dalvi’s financial situation, his ability to pay medical bills, and documentation regarding his treatment. The Trust presented a statement from Dalvi’s wife explaining his condition. She stated that he is bedridden and currently being cared for at home by two caretakers and a physiotherapist, with recovery expected to take at least a year. After reviewing all documents, the court observed, “We are convinced that the veteran actor is in need of financial help.”The bench further noted that Section 17(2)(2)(o) of the Shree Sai Baba Sansthan Trust (Shirdi) Act, 2004, allows the Trust to support noble causes aimed at human welfare or provide assistance during personal hardships.Taking into account Dalvi’s contribution and the deep devotion of the public, the court held that extending such financial help aligns with the values upheld by Sai Baba and the Trust.
