‘There Was So Much Hindu-Muslim…’: Randeep Hooda Reveals Why He Rejected Aurangzeb’s Role in ‘Chhaava’

Randeep Hooda recently revealed that he was offered the role of Aurangzeb in the film Chhaava, but he decided to turn it down due to the social atmosphere prevailing at the time.

In an interview with Zoom, the actor said he deeply admires director Laxman Utekar both professionally and personally. Hooda shared that Utekar had approached him for the role of Aurangzeb while he was going through a physically and emotionally demanding phase. The actor further explained that he had just completed shooting for Swatantrya Veer Savarkar and was busy with its post-production work. Around the same time, he was also dealing with a court case.

“I love Laxman (Utekar) as a director and as a person. He had first come to me for Aurangzeb's role in ‘Chhaava’. I had just stopped shooting for ‘Savarkar’ and I was doing the film’s post-production. And, I was going through an IP court case and I had so much Hindu-Muslim thing going on in the whole narrative and I just did not want to go down that street,” Randeep said.

The actor added that his physical transformation for his previous project made it difficult for him to immediately step into another intense historical role. The actor said he had become extremely lean and had shaved his head for the character, making it challenging to quickly prepare for yet another demanding period drama.

“Chhaava” went on to become one of the biggest Hindi film successes in recent years. The film received widespread appreciation for its portrayal of Sambhaji Maharaj and its powerful storytelling. The role of Aurangzeb, eventually played by Akshaye Khanna, also emerged as one of the film’s most talked-about performances.

On the work front, Randeep Hooda was recently seen in Inspector Avinash Season 2. Directed by Neerraj Pathak, the latest season premiered on May 15 on JioHotstar.
