Gujarat Govt Increases Farmers’ Barbed Wire Fencing Subsidy to Rs 300 Per Metre
The Gujarat government has announced a major relief package for farmers by making significant changes to its Barbed Wire Fencing Scheme aimed at protecting crops from stray cattle and wild animals.
Under the revised policy introduced by the government led by Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel, financial assistance for installing barbed wire fencing around agricultural fields has been increased from Rs 200 to Rs 300 per running metre. In another major benefit for small farmers, the minimum land eligibility requirement has also been reduced from 2 hectares to just 1 hectare.

In another major benefit for small farmers, the minimum land eligibility requirement has also been reduced from 2 hectares to just 1 hectare.
State Agriculture Minister Jitubhai Vaghani shared details of the revised scheme and said that earlier farmers received either Rs 200 per metre or 50 percent of the total fencing cost, whichever was lower. However, due to rising prices of iron materials and labour, farmers were facing higher expenses. To reduce this financial burden, the government has now increased the subsidy to Rs 300 per metre or 50 percent of the total cost.
The minister further informed that nearly one lakh farmers have already submitted online applications for the scheme through the government’s i-Khedut portal. To ensure farmers can complete preparations before the monsoon sowing season begins, the government plans to approve all applications in phases at the earliest.
For the implementation of the scheme, the Gujarat government has sanctioned a budget of Rs 240 crore.
Usually, the i-Khedut portal for this scheme opens only once a year, but this time the government has assured that the portal may be reopened if needed so that more farmers can avail the benefits. The minister also stated that if the approved Rs 240 crore budget falls short, the government will arrange additional funds to ensure that all eligible farmers receive financial support under the scheme.
