Gujarat Rains: IMD Issues Red Alert for South Gujarat, Ukai Dam Inflow Surges, Schools Shut in Amreli

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for parts of South Gujarat as the southwest monsoon gains momentum across the state. With an active weather system bringing widespread rainfall, authorities have warned of extremely heavy showers, waterlogging, rising river levels, and possible disruption to daily life.

Residents in vulnerable areas have been advised to avoid unnecessary travel and stay updated through official weather advisories.

Red and Orange Alerts Issued Across Gujarat

The IMD has placed five districts under a Red Alert, forecasting extremely heavy rainfall, while five other districts are under an Orange Alert, where heavy rain, thunderstorms, lightning, and strong winds are expected.

District administrations have been instructed to remain on high alert and keep disaster response teams ready for any emergency situations.

Heavy Rain Likely in South Gujarat and Saurashtra

South Gujarat and the Saurashtra region are expected to receive the heaviest rainfall during the day. Continuous showers have raised concerns over flooding in low-lying areas and a possible rise in water levels of rivers and streams.

While the rainfall is expected to benefit agriculture and replenish water resources, excessive rain may also damage standing crops. Authorities have urged people to stay away from rivers, lakes, and coastal areas until weather conditions improve.

Active Weather System Strengthens Monsoon

Meteorologists say an active weather system over Gujarat and neighbouring regions has strengthened monsoon activity across western India. Increased moisture in the atmosphere is likely to trigger thunderstorms, gusty winds, and widespread rainfall over the next few days.

Heavy Rain Forecast for Next Five Days

Ahmedabad is likely to witness heavy rainfall, with temperatures expected to range between 25°C and 34°C. In other parts of Gujarat, daytime temperatures may hover around 32°C, while minimum temperatures are expected to remain near 27°C.

The weather department has forecast heavy to extremely heavy rainfall across the state over the next five days, particularly in South Gujarat, Saurashtra, and parts of Central Gujarat.

Fishermen Warned, Traffic Disruptions Expected

Authorities have warned of waterlogging on roads, rising river levels, and possible traffic disruptions due to the continuing rainfall.

Fishermen have been strictly advised not to venture into the Arabian Sea because of rough sea conditions and high waves. Residents living in coastal areas have also been urged to remain cautious.

Ukai Dam Receives Massive Inflow

Heavy rainfall in the catchment areas has led to a sharp rise in water inflow into Ukai Dam, one of Gujarat's key reservoirs in Tapi district.

The inflow increased dramatically from 6,293 cusecs to 39,548 cusecs, while the dam's water level rose by 1.04 feet in the last 24 hours, reaching 309.78 feet.

As a precautionary measure, authorities are currently releasing 800 cusecs of water into the river through the hydropower station.

Schools Closed in Five Talukas of Amreli

Amid persistent heavy rainfall, the Amreli district administration has declared a holiday for all government and private primary schools in Savarkundla, Rajula, Jafrabad, Dhari, and Khambha talukas.

The decision was taken on the instructions of the district collector to ensure the safety of students.

Officials have also appealed to the public to rely only on official weather updates and avoid spreading or believing unverified information and rumours.
