Novo Nordisk Launches Once-Weekly Insulin Injection 'Awiqli' in India
Danish pharmaceutical company Novo Nordisk has launched its once-weekly basal insulin injection Awiqli in India, offering a new treatment option for adults living with diabetes.
The company introduced Awiqli in two pen formats containing 700 units and 2,100 units, with a cost of Rs.3.73 per unit, Novo Nordisk India Managing Director Vikrant Shrotriya said.

India has become the seventh country where the modern insulin therapy has been launched.
According to the company, Awiqli is designed to simplify insulin treatment for people with Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes by replacing the traditional once-daily insulin routine with a once-a-week injection schedule.

Reducing Insulin Treatment Burden
Explaining the benefits of the new therapy, Shrotriya said many diabetes patients hesitate to start insulin treatment because they associate it with daily injections and lifelong dependence.
The once-weekly dosage option could help reduce this psychological barrier and encourage more patients to begin insulin therapy when required.
He added that Awiqli provides greater convenience while offering improved control compared with currently available basal insulin therapies.

“The aim of medicine is to either improve effectiveness or provide greater convenience,” Shrotriya said, highlighting the role of innovation in diabetes care.
Available Across India
Novo Nordisk said Awiqli will be made available across India through its network of around 4,500 distributors.
The company stated that the treatment could reduce the annual number of insulin injections from 365 to just 52, significantly lowering the burden for patients who require insulin therapy.

India Among Countries With Highest Diabetes Burden
Novo Nordisk highlighted that India is among the countries most affected by the global diabetes epidemic, with more than 101 million people living with diabetes.
The company said the launch of Awiqli comes at a crucial time as millions of patients continue to face challenges in managing the condition.
