Yoga Can Cut Type 2 Diabetes Risk by Nearly 40%, Says Jitendra Singh at Book Launch

Ahead of the International Day of Yoga on June 21, Union Minister Jitendra Singh highlighted the growing scientific evidence supporting yoga as a powerful tool for preventive healthcare. Speaking at the launch of a new book on diabetes prevention, Singh said that regular yoga practice can reduce the risk of developing Type 2 diabetes by nearly 40%.

The book, Yoga and Prevention of Type 2 Diabetes: An Integrated Approach to Wellness, edited by renowned endocrinologist Dr. S.V. Madhu, is based on findings from the Indian Prevention of Diabetes Study (IPDS)—a three-year, multicentric clinical trial involving nearly 1,000 participants across India.

According to the study, individuals at high risk of developing diabetes who followed a structured 40-minute yoga routine alongside standard lifestyle modifications significantly reduced their chances of progressing from prediabetes to Type 2 diabetes.

Addressing the gathering, Singh emphasized that yoga is no longer viewed solely as a traditional wellness practice but is increasingly recognized as a scientifically validated approach to preventive healthcare. Referring to this year’s International Day of Yoga theme, “Yoga for Healthy Ageing,” he noted that healthy ageing is not only about living longer but also about minimizing the burden of chronic diseases such as diabetes.

The minister said the study’s findings support Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of integrating yoga into mainstream healthcare and promoting it as an effective tool for preventive medicine and holistic well-being.

He further added that India has a unique opportunity to lead the global shift toward preventive healthcare by combining modern medical science with evidence-based traditional practices.

The book examines scientific research on yoga’s role in preventing and managing diabetes, explains the biological mechanisms behind its health benefits, and provides practical guidance on yoga techniques that may help reduce diabetes risk and improve overall wellness.
