Why Is Tulsi Not Offered to Lord Ganesha? Know the Mythological Story
According to Hindu religious beliefs and scriptures, particularly the Brahma Vaivarta Purana, offering Tulsi leaves to Lord Ganesha is considered prohibited. While Tulsi holds an important place in Hindu worship, devotees traditionally offer durva grass, modak, motichoor laddoos and Shami leaves to Lord Ganesha instead.
The belief is associated with a mythological story involving Lord Ganesha and Goddess Tulsi, in which both are said to have cursed each other. Here is the story behind why Tulsi is not offered to Lord Ganesha.
Goddess Tulsi Interrupted Ganesha's Meditation
According to the legend, Lord Ganesha was once deeply engaged in meditation on the banks of the Ganga. At that time, Goddess Tulsi happened to pass by and was captivated by Ganesha's radiant appearance.
She wished to marry him and, with the intention of marrying Ganesha, interrupted his meditation and proposed marriage to him.
Ganesha Politely Rejected the Proposal
Lord Ganesha respectfully declined the proposal, explaining that he had chosen to remain a lifelong celibate.
Tulsi became angry after her proposal was rejected and, according to the legend, cursed Ganesha, saying that he would have two wives. It is believed that this curse eventually resulted in Ganesha marrying Riddhi and Siddhi.
In response, Ganesha also became angry and cursed Tulsi, saying that she would marry an asura named Shankhachuda.
Tulsi Asked for Forgiveness
Later, Goddess Tulsi realised her mistake and asked Lord Ganesha for forgiveness. Ganesha then granted her a boon, saying that she would become especially dear to Lord Vishnu and Lord Krishna and would be regarded as sacred and spiritually beneficial in the Kali Yuga.
However, Ganesha also declared that Tulsi leaves would not be used in his worship or offered as bhog.
This is why devotees traditionally offer durva grass and modaks to Lord Ganesha instead of Tulsi. Durva is considered especially auspicious in Ganesha worship, while Tulsi remains traditionally prohibited.
