Route and Duration of the Rath Yatra

The three grand chariots are pulled by devotees for nearly 3 kilometres from the Jagannath Temple to the Gundicha Temple.

The deities stay at Gundicha Temple for 10 days before returning to the main Jagannath Temple on the 11th day during the Bahuda Yatra.

5 Important Rules for Pulling the Chariots

Although the Rath Yatra welcomes everyone regardless of caste, religion, nationality, or social background, devotees are expected to follow certain traditional practices.

1. Wear a traditional dhoti while participating in pulling the chariot.
2. Maintain cleanliness, reverence, and the sanctity of the ritual throughout the procession.
3. Pull the three chariots in their traditional sequence under the guidance of temple authorities and volunteers.
4. Pull the sacred rope for at least a few steps—or for as long as you can do so comfortably and safely—then make way for other devotees, allowing everyone the opportunity to participate in this sacred tradition.
5. Visit the Gundicha Temple, where Lord Jagannath, Lord Balabhadra, and Devi Subhadra stay during the Rath Yatra.
