The story begins with Surya’s wife Sangya who found it difficult to endure the Sun God’s intense radiance. Using her powers, she created her shadow form, Chhaya, and left for the forest, while Surya remained unaware of the change.

Chhaya was a devoted follower of Shiva. While carrying Shani in her womb, she performed intense penance, enduring extreme heat and fasting without food or water.

When Shani was born, Surya doubted his paternity due to the child’s dark appearance. Hurt by the insult to his mother, Shani cast his powerful gaze upon Surya.
Then, Surya lost his radiance and was afflicted, until Lord Shiva intervened, making him realise his mistake. Though Surya regained his brilliance, the tension between father and son endured.

Lord Shiva later bestowed upon Shani the role of the divine judge, responsible for delivering justice based on karma. As a devotee of Shiva, worship of Shiva is also considered effective in pacifying Shani’s influence.
