It is widely believed that Lord Shiva incarnated as Lord Hanuman, but few know why He chose to do so. To understand this divine mystery, we must look back to an ancient legend from the beginning of the Ramayana, when Lord Rama took birth on Earth.According to the scriptures, Lord Hanuman is actually an incarnation of Lord Shiva, and it was Lord Rama Himself who became the reason for Shiva’s incarnation.Once, when Lord Rama was about five years old, Lord Shiva wished to visit Earth and see Lord Rama in His human form. However, there was a dilemma — Shiva could not appear before Lord Rama in His original divine form. One day, He shared His desire with Goddess Parvati, saying, “O Parvati, My Lord Rama has descended to Earth. I long to behold Him and serve Him. I wish to go and dwell in the realm where He lives.”Hearing this, Goddess Parvati became emotional. With tears in her eyes, she said, “O Lord, what mistake have I made that You wish to leave me? If You go to Earth, I cannot live without You.”Realizing Parvati’s deep devotion, Lord Shiva found Himself torn between His love for Parvati and His longing to serve Lord Rama. He was caught in a divine dilemma — to stay with His consort or to fulfill His duty toward the incarnation of Lord Vishnu. At last, Lord Shiva revealed a great secret to Parvati, saying, “Among My eleven Rudras, one shall take birth in the form of a vanara (monkey). That form will be known as Hanuman.”Thus, one of the Eleven Rudras manifested as Hanuman, destined to become Lord Rama’s most devoted servant and protector. However, some people believe that Lord Hanuman is an ansh of Lord Shiva because he possessed all the divine qualities — strength, courage, and wisdom.Shiva foresaw the events of Lord Rama’s life — that a time would come when Rama would need his divine help to accomplish His mission on Earth. He also knew that in Kaliyuga, neither He (Shiva) nor Rama would be physically visible to devotees. Therefore, He decided to create an immortal form — Hanuman, the eternal devotee — who would remain on Earth to protect and bless humanity. That is why it is said that Hanuman is Chiranjeevi — immortal and ever-present on Earth. Devotees who worship Him with true devotion can still feel His divine presence today.
