Vat Purnima 2026: 5 Simple Remedies for a Happy Married Life and Prosperity

Vat Purnima
Vat Purnima is one of the most significant Hindu festivals observed by married women, who fast and worship the sacred banyan tree while praying for the long life, good health, and well-being of their husbands. The festival is inspired by the legendary story of Savitri and Satyavan, where Goddess Savitri is believed to have won back her husband's life from Yama, the god of death, through her devotion and determination.

Along with the traditional puja, several simple rituals are followed on this day. According to Hindu beliefs, these practices are believed to strengthen marital harmony, bring prosperity to the household, and invite divine blessings.

1. Tie Raw Cotton Thread Around the Banyan Tree

During the Vat Purnima puja, devotees traditionally wrap a raw cotton thread around the banyan tree seven or 108 times while praying for their husband's long life and the happiness of the family.

After completing the ritual, donating a new white cotton thread to a Brahmin is considered auspicious. It is believed to help remove obstacles from family life and promote peace and prosperity.

2. Donate a Bamboo Hand Fan and Soaked Chickpeas

After the worship, place soaked chickpeas, seasonal fruits, and clothes on a traditional bamboo hand fan and offer them to your mother-in-law or another respected elder in the family.

Seeking their blessings is believed to strengthen family bonds, promote mutual respect, and bring warmth and harmony into relationships.

3. Worship Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati

According to Hindu tradition, the banyan tree symbolizes the presence of Lord Brahma, Lord Vishnu, and Lord Shiva. Therefore, devotees are also encouraged to worship Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati on Vat Purnima.

Praying to the divine couple is believed to foster love, understanding, and stability in married life while helping couples overcome difficulties together.

4. Offer Arghya to the Moon for Financial Well-Being

Those facing financial challenges should offer Arghya (a sacred offering) to the Moon on the night of the full moon.

Mix a little rice and sugar with raw milk and offer it while silently praying for your wishes. According to traditional beliefs, this ritual is associated with attracting prosperity and easing financial hardships.

Tips to Remember For Vat Purnima Puja

Wearing red, yellow, or green clothing during the Vat Purnima puja is considered auspicious. Avoid black, blue, and plain white attire during the worship.

If a banyan tree is not accessible, devotees can perform the puja before a potted banyan sapling or even a Tulsi (holy basil) plant, offering prayers with sincerity and devotion.
