9 Workers Killed, 14 Injured as Molten Steel at 1500 Degree Celcius Spill at Visakhapatnam Steel Plant
Nine workers lost their lives and 14 others sustained injuries in a major industrial accident at Rashtriya Ispat Nigam Limited's Visakhapatnam Steel Plant (VSP) on Monday, making it one of the deadliest workplace incidents in recent years.
According to official sources, the tragedy occurred at the Steel Melt Shop (SMS-2) and adjoining facilities when a large quantity of molten steel spilled during operations in the evening shift. Several workers were present in the area when the accident took place.
Union leaders at the steel plant alleged that inadequate maintenance of machinery and negligence on the part of the management contributed to the mishap. They claimed repeated concerns over equipment upkeep had been ignored. The plant management had not issued a detailed statement on the incident at the time of reporting.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed deep grief over the loss of lives and announced an ex-gratia payment of Rs 2 lakh from the Prime Minister’s National Relief Fund (PMNRF) to the families of each deceased worker. The injured will receive financial assistance of Rs 50,000 each.
Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu also conveyed his shock and sorrow over the accident. He directed district officials to ensure all necessary support and medical assistance for the injured workers and affected families.
Preliminary reports suggest that a hot metal bucket, or ladle, carrying molten steel at nearly 1,500 degrees Celsius may have collapsed following a blast, causing the superheated metal to spill onto workers stationed below. The sudden incident triggered panic across the facility as workers rushed to safety.

Multiple fire tenders were deployed to control the situation and extinguish the resulting fire. The injured were shifted to hospitals across Visakhapatnam for treatment, while rescue and recovery operations continued at the site.
The deceased workers were identified as Appa Rao, Prabhakar Rao, Krishna, Ramana, Trinath, Appala Raju, Gold Kumar, Bhanu Kumar, and Ramanath. Of them, six were permanent employees and three were contract workers.

State Home Minister V. Anitha, along with MP Bharat, District Collector M.A. Kishore, and other senior officials, visited the accident site to assess the situation and oversee relief measures.
