The Supreme Court of India on Monday refused to grant an urgent hearing on a petition seeking a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) probe into the activities of people associated with the “Cockroach Janta Party,” a satirical social media movement that surfaced after recent remarks made by Chief Justice of India Surya Kant.
Advocate N K Goswami, appearing on behalf of the petitioner, argued before the court that the online movement was harming the image and dignity of the judiciary.
Hearing the matter, a Bench comprising CJI Surya Kant along with Justices Joymalya Bagchi and V M Pancholi remarked, “Don’t take it so sentimentally.”

Another lawyer informed the court that the petitioners were also seeking a CBI investigation into allegations related to fake law degrees. The counsel further submitted that courtroom exchanges and judicial observations should not be commercially or publicly exploited on social media platforms.
Responding to the submissions, the Chief Justice said there was no immediate urgency in the matter and added, “We will see.”
The “Cockroach Janta Party” emerged online earlier this month and quickly gained popularity on social media, especially among younger users. The movement originated after court proceedings held on May 15, during which the Bench headed by CJI Surya Kant expressed concern over unemployed young lawyers shifting from legal practice towards social media activities and RTI activism.

Later, the Chief Justice clarified that his comments were specifically directed at individuals allegedly entering professions using forged qualifications and fake degrees, and not at unemployed youth in general.
