Mumbai Rains Wreak Havoc: 6 Killed in Mankhurd Building Collapse, Schools Shut, Landslides Disrupt Mumbai-Pune Route
India's financial capital has once again been brought to a standstill by relentless monsoon rains. Torrential downpours have flooded roads, disrupted transport services, triggered landslides, and claimed lives. A 4-storey building collapse in Mumbai's Mankhurd area killed six people, while authorities have declared a red alert for heavy rainfall. Schools across Mumbai and Navi Mumbai remain closed as a precaution.
6 Dead After Mankhurd Building Collapse
A portion of a four-storey residential building collapsed in Mankhurd at around 8:30 pm on Sunday, killing six people. Emergency response teams, including Mumbai Police, the Fire Brigade, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), and ambulance services, rushed to the site and launched rescue and relief operations.
Officials continued clearing debris while assessing the structural safety of nearby buildings.
Heavy Rain Causes Widespread Flooding
Mumbai has recorded between 250 mm and 300 mm of rainfall in several areas since Sunday, leading to severe waterlogging across the city. Flooded roads slowed traffic, stranded commuters, and disrupted daily life. Multiple incidents of uprooted trees were also reported as strong winds accompanied the heavy showers.
With the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issuing a red alert for continued heavy rainfall, the Maharashtra government ordered the closure of all schools and colleges in Mumbai and Navi Mumbai on Monday to ensure public safety.
Landslides Hit Mumbai-Pune Route
Persistent rainfall also triggered two landslides on the Mumbai-Pune railway route on Monday morning.
Officials quoted by PTI informed that a landslide occurred near Thakurwadi in the ghat section and another landslide was reported on the middle line between Khandala and Monkey Hill at around 3.05 am.
The landslides affected all three railway lines in the section, forcing Central Railway to cancel, divert, and regulate several long-distance train services.

Local Train Services Continue With Minor Delays
In a post on X, Central Railway said that suburban train services on all four of its corridors continue to operate normally despite the heavy rainfall.
However, trains on the Main Line are running approximately 6 to 8 minutes behind schedule, while Harbour Line services are delayed by around 4 minutes.

Why Is Mumbai Receiving Such Heavy Rain?
According to meteorologists, multiple active weather systems are driving the intense rainfall across Maharashtra. The primary factor is a deep low-pressure area over the Bay of Bengal, which strengthened on July 3, drawing large amounts of moisture into the region and intensifying monsoon activity over western India.
Authorities have urged residents to remain indoors unless necessary, avoid waterlogged areas, and stay updated with official weather advisories as heavy rainfall is expected to continue.
