Premium Petrol Prices Hiked in India: Reasons, Impact, and Who Will Pay More

Petrol Pump
Premium petrol prices in India have been increased once again. Oil marketing companies have raised the prices of premium fuel variants such as XP95, XP100, Power, and Speed by around Rs.2 to Rs.2.3 per litre. The revised rates have come into effect from today, while regular petrol and diesel prices remain unchanged.

Why Have Prices Increased?

According to market experts, the primary reason behind the hike is the fluctuation in global crude oil prices. Ongoing geopolitical tensions in the Middle East have impacted international oil markets.

Additionally, the cost of special additives used in premium fuels—such as high-octane boosters and performance-enhancing compounds—has also increased. Premium petrol is already Rs.5–Rs.10 or more expensive than regular petrol, and this latest hike is expected to widen the price gap further.

Premium fuels fall under a deregulated category, allowing companies to set prices based on market conditions. With declining marketing margins in recent months, oil companies have been under pressure. Since premium fuels offer better margins, companies have increased their prices to offset losses.

Impact on Consumers

The good news is that there has been no change in the prices of regular petrol and diesel. The last revision was in March 2024, when prices were reduced by ?2 per litre, and they have remained stable since then.

As premium petrol accounts for only a small portion of total fuel consumption, the overall impact on the general public is expected to be limited.

Who Will Be Affected the Most?

The price hike will primarily impact owners of high-end and luxury vehicles, as well as high-performance cars and bikes that require premium fuel.

Premium petrol, with an octane rating of 95 or higher, ensures better engine performance, smoother acceleration, longer engine life, and reduced knocking. However, with prices rising by over Rs.2 per litre, these users are likely to see an increase in their monthly fuel expenses.

In major cities like New Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, and Pune, premium petrol prices are already nearing record highs—ranging around Rs.110–Rs.113 per litre—and could climb further after the latest hike.

What Lies Ahead?

While the hike poses a challenge for users dependent on premium fuel for better vehicle performance, regular consumers are spared for now. Experts believe that if global crude oil prices stabilize, premium fuel rates may also ease in the future.

Consumers are advised to follow their vehicle manufacturer’s recommendations when choosing fuel and avoid unnecessary spending on premium variants unless required.
