Gujarat Police have arrested a couple who, 15 years ago, killed their respective spouses. The two met while serving life sentences in jail, became friends, then fell in love. They eventually married and even have a five-year-old son. Six years ago, both fled after being released on parole and furlough—and had been living in hiding ever since. The Special Operations Group traced them through call data records and arrested them. The accused have been identified as 38-year-old Mohammad Riaz Mansuri and 36-year-old Kinnari Patel. Police confirmed they were sent back to Surat Central Jail on Wednesday, while their five-year-old child has been kept in a separate room within the prison.According to police, Mansuri hails from Bihar, while Kinnari is from Valsad, Gujarat. In 2010, Kinnari was convicted for murdering her husband, Hitesh Patel. In 2008, Mansuri was found guilty of pouring kerosene on his wife and setting her on fire. Both were sentenced to life imprisonment and lodged in Surat Central Jail, where they first met in the prison visitation area. Their closeness grew during these meetings, and they eventually fell in love.Escape After Parole and FurloughAs per Valsad Police, Kinnari was released on furlough on September 9, 2017, while Mansuri was released on parole on May 28, 2018. Neither returned to jail. Instead, they abandoned their homes and disappeared.Jail authorities filed separate cases against them at Valsad Rural and Limbayat police stations. During the investigation, officials learned from sources that the two had been seen together in the jail visitation room before absconding. How the Police Found ThemPolice visited Mansuri’s home and analysed the call detail records (CDR) of his elder sister’s phone, narrowing down 12 suspicious numbers. One number was found registered in Mansuri’s name, linked to his Aadhaar and bank account in Panipat, Haryana. When investigators examined his call records, they found a 30-second phone call in September 2025 made to a Gujarat phone number belonging to Nirali Patel, Kinnari’s elder sister. This confirmed that Mansuri and Kinnari were living together in Panipat.Following this lead, a Valsad police team travelled to Panipat, Haryana, and arrested the couple.
