As concerns grow over the development of El Nino conditions in the Pacific Ocean, meteorologists are closely monitoring another crucial climate phenomenon that could influence India's rainfall outlook — the Indian Ocean Dipole (IOD).
The IOD is currently in a neutral phase, but weather agencies are watching for signs that it could turn positive later this year. Such a development may help offset some of the adverse effects traditionally associated with El Nino and support a stronger monsoon season across India.
Why the Indian Ocean Dipole Matters
The Indian Ocean Dipole is a climate pattern driven by differences in sea surface temperatures between the western and eastern parts of the Indian Ocean.
According to NASA, a Positive IOD occurs when waters near the western Indian Ocean, close to Africa, become warmer than average while waters near Indonesia in the eastern Indian Ocean remain cooler. A Negative IOD is the opposite, with warmer waters in the east and cooler waters in the west.
