Despite these qualities, there were times when Ashwin also had some low moments in his career when senior cricketers like Dhoni and Master Blaster Sachin Tendulkar among others came to his rescue.
Off-spinner revealed how Sachin boosted his morale during the 2011 World Cup when he was not getting enough chances as Harbhajan Singh was India’s first-choice off-spinner.
“Sachin came up to me and said, you’re bowling really well in the nets, bowl like this when you get your game as well,” Ashwin told WV Raman in Star Sports new series ‘Mind Masters by MFORE’.
The second instance happened during the 2013 Champions Trophy where Ashwin did not have a great start to the campaign. At that time, Dhoni backed the off-spinner and later he ended up playing an instrumental role in India’s memorable victory.
“Dhoni came and told me in the first game of the CT 2013 that I was bowling fantastic even though I didn’t pick up a wicket,” Ashwin said.
Among legendary cricketers who spoke about the importance of Mind Skills training, former West Indies legend Brian Lara said for MFORE.
“Talent is one thing, but one has to be mentally strong, which is a very important part of the game. I have worked on that part of the game more than anything else. So, for me, the key to be a top-class sportsperson you need to focus on mental strength,” Lara said. (UNI)
