Brendon McCullum Sacked as England Test Coach, Bazball Era Comes to an End
Brendon McCullum has been removed as England's Test head coach, bringing an end to the Bazball era in one of the biggest shake-ups in English cricket. The decision comes just two weeks after Ben Stokes stepped down as Test captain and announced his retirement from international cricket.
According to BBC Sport, McCullum will continue as England's white-ball coach but will no longer oversee the Test side after a disappointing run of results and a series of off-field controversies. England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) Director of Cricket Rob Key will remain in his role after the board reviewed the men's team's recent performances and overall direction.
McCullum Reacts to Exit
Expressing disappointment over the decision, McCullum said he was proud of what the Test team achieved during his tenure.
"I've absolutely loved coaching the Test side and I'm incredibly proud of what we've achieved together. There've been some unbelievable highs and a few tough days along the way, but that's all part of taking on a challenge like this. Of course I'm gutted not to be continuing, but I respect the decision. My focus now is on giving everything I've got to the white-ball teams and helping England keep moving forward."
Poor Results and Off-Field Issues
England's Test fortunes declined significantly over the past year, with the team losing seven of its last nine Test matches, including a crushing 4-1 Ashes defeat in Australia.
Although McCullum, Stokes and Rob Key initially retained the ECB's backing following the Ashes, England's subsequent 2-1 home series defeat to New Zealand intensified pressure on the management.

The team's struggles were compounded by off-field incidents, including reports involving players Ben Stokes and Gus Atkinson, followed by Stokes' unexpected retirement from international cricket.
England Search for New Test Leadership
England now face the challenge of appointing both a new Test captain and head coach ahead of the three-Test series against Pakistan, beginning on August 19.
Harry Brook is considered the leading contender to replace Stokes as captain, although the appointment could depend on the identity of the new head coach.
Who Could Replace McCullum?
Several names are being discussed as potential successors.
Former England coach Andy Flower is regarded as a leading candidate, although he is currently involved in franchise cricket. Domestic options include Glamorgan head coach Richard Dawson and Surrey coach Gareth Batty.
England Lions coach Andrew Flintoff has previously ruled himself out of the senior role, while Durham coach Ryan Campbell and former Australia coach Darren Lehmann are also among the names being mentioned.

End of the Bazball Era
McCullum took charge of England's Test team in 2022 and, alongside Ben Stokes, transformed the side with the aggressive "Bazball" approach.
England won 10 of their first 11 Tests under the partnership, securing memorable victories over New Zealand, India and Pakistan. However, the momentum faded in the following years.

Since that remarkable start, England have won only 17 of their next 38 Tests while suffering 19 defeats. Series losses in India, Australia and at home to New Zealand ultimately led to the ECB's decision to make a change.
Focus Shifts to White-Ball Cricket
Despite leaving the Test role, McCullum remains England's white-ball coach. England recently completed a dominant 4-0 T20I series victory over India, climbing to the top of the ICC T20 rankings.
His current contract with the white-ball team runs until the conclusion of the 2027 ICC Men's Cricket World Cup, where he will now focus entirely on limited-overs success.
