'Drop Me If I'm Not Performing': Mohammad Kaif Reveals Rohit Sharma's Stand
Questions surrounding Rohit Sharma's participation in the 2027 ODI World Cup continue to dominate discussions among cricket fans and experts. While speculation about his future has intensified in recent weeks, no official announcement has been made regarding his place in India's long-term plans.
BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia had earlier dismissed reports claiming Lord's ODI would be Rohit's farewell match. However, uncertainty remains over whether the veteran batter will be part of India's campaign at the next World Cup, which is set to be held in South Africa, Zimbabwe and Namibia.
Former India cricketer Mohammad Kaif recently shared his thoughts on the matter and suggested that Rohit has no intention of stepping away from international cricket on his own.
Speaking on his YouTube channel, Kaif said that Rohit has made it clear that the selectors should decide his future if they feel his performances are no longer up to the mark.
"One thing is quite clear now. Rohit Sharma has decided that if he is not performing well enough, the selectors can make the decision to leave him out. He is not going to announce his retirement on his own. He continues to display passion, commitment and dedication, and from his perspective, he is doing his job. The rest is up to the selectors," Kaif said.
Kaif also pointed to the uncertainty surrounding Rohit's future and questioned why there has been no official statement regarding his role in the team's preparations for the 2027 World Cup.
He said that although members of the coaching staff have spoken about giving Rohit complete freedom to play his natural game, nobody has confirmed whether he remains part of the team's long-term plans.
"Such clarity is important because every player goes through fluctuations in form. The absence of an official statement has created a great deal of confusion. We are not aware of everything happening behind closed doors, but it appears that Rohit has decided not to walk away voluntarily," Kaif explained.
The former Indian batter also recalled two significant decisions Rohit had taken in the past. After leading India to victory in the 2024 T20 World Cup, Rohit announced his retirement from the shortest format to make way for younger players. According to Kaif, the current situation is different because Rohit now appears determined to let the selectors decide when the time is right for him to move on.
For the time being, Rohit remains a part of India's ODI setup and is expected to feature in the upcoming series against the West Indies. His recent performances have strengthened his case, making any decision regarding his future even more challenging.
Meanwhile, Devajit Saikia has reiterated that reports about Rohit's final international appearance are inaccurate. At the same time, reports have indicated that the selection committee and coaching staff are facing increased scrutiny over the uncertainty surrounding the veteran batter's future.
