Egypt pips Australia in penalty shootout in FIFA WC Fixture
Egypt scripted history by winning their first-ever FIFA World Cup knockout match, defeating Australia 4-2 in a penalty shootout after a gripping 1-1 draw following extra time in their Round of 32 clash at AT&T Stadium here.The seven-time African champions held their nerve from the spot, converting all four penalties as Mohamed Salah’s audacious Panenka and Hossam Abdelmaguid’s decisive kick sealed passage to the Round of 16, where Egypt will face either reigning champions Argentina or Cape Verde.
Australia’s hopes ended in heartbreak after Harry Souttar blazed the opening penalty over the crossbar before teenage defender Luke Herrington struck the bar with the Socceroos’ fourth attempt, leaving Abdelmaguid to calmly convert the winner.
Egypt had looked the better side for much of the contest.
