Hardik Pandya Explains Jasprit Bumrah’s New-Ball Role

Mumbai Indians captain Hardik Pandya has clarified the thinking behind Jasprit Bumrah’s limited use with the new ball, dismissing speculation and insisting that the approach is part of a calculated team strategy.

The Mumbai Indians captain said Bumrah’s role should not be misread, pointing out that the premier pacer has only occasionally been held back from opening the bowling.

“People keep asking why Jassi hasn’t bowled with the new ball, but it’s only happened a handful of times. It’s not a problem—it’s about how special he is,” Pandya said, highlighting the clarity of roles within the attack.

Bumrah had recently endured a rare dry spell, going 153 deliveries without a wicket before breaking through in style by dismissing Sai Sudharsan—a moment that shifted momentum firmly in Mumbai’s favour during a key phase of the match.

Pandya emphasised that Mumbai’s bowling plans are built around impact and match situations rather than fixed patterns. Bumrah’s deployment, he explained, is guided by specific match-ups and game scenarios, not convention.

The skipper also reiterated that the team’s focus remains on execution—hitting the right areas and maintaining intent across phases—while maximising each bowler’s strengths within the overall structure.

Pandya reserved special praise for Tilak Varma, whose match-winning century proved decisive. “With the kind of talent Tilak has, he doesn’t need much advice. It was just a matter of time before he delivered. It was important for him, for the group, and for Mumbai Indians,” he said.

He also acknowledged the team’s sharp fielding effort and highlighted the contribution of young players, singling out Naman Dhir for his impact during a crucial stage of the innings.
