KKR Retire No. 12 Jersey to Honour Andre Russell’s Legendary Legacy
In a heartfelt tribute to franchise legend Andre Russell, the Kolkata Knight Riders have retired jersey number 12, celebrating his enduring legacy as their “Eternal Knight.” The announcement was made during the team’s preseason event, Knights Unplugged 3.0, on Tuesday evening.
Russell, who has rejoined the setup as a power coach ahead of the new season, enjoyed a remarkable 12-year stint with KKR from 2014 to 2025 in the Indian Premier League. Known for his explosive batting, match-winning spells, and distinctive style, the West Indies star became one of the franchise’s most iconic players, playing a key role in their title-winning campaigns in 2014 and 2024.
Over 140 IPL matches for KKR, Russell scored 2,651 runs at a blistering strike rate of 174.17 and picked up 123 wickets, making him only the second all-rounder in IPL history to achieve the double of 2,000 runs and 100 wickets. His standout season came in 2019, when he was named the tournament’s Most Valuable Player after smashing 510 runs at an astonishing strike rate of 204.81.
A two-time ICC Men's T20 World Cup winner (2012 and 2016), Russell also holds the best bowling figures by a KKR player in IPL history—5 for 15 against the Mumbai Indians in 2021. With 122 wickets, he remains the franchise’s second-highest wicket-taker, behind Sunil Narine.
KKR CEO Venky Mysore said the decision reflects Russell’s deep connection with the franchise. “He has given us countless moments to celebrate. Jersey number 12 became synonymous with him, and retiring it is our way of honouring his immense contribution,” he said.
An emotional Russell expressed gratitude, saying his journey with KKR has been “incredibly special.” Reflecting on his time with the team, he added that winning the IPL with KKR holds a unique place in his career, even alongside his World Cup triumphs.
