"Not Seeing Anything Like That": Shreyas Iyer’s Remark on Vaibhav Suryavanshi Hype Sparks Controversy

India, led by Shreyas Iyer, had a disappointing start to their campaign and will look to bounce back against England in the first T20 International. Ahead of the match, attention shifted to young batter Vaibhav Suryavanshi, with growing calls for his inclusion in the playing XI after he was left out during the Ireland series.

Recently, Union Minister of Textiles Giriraj Singh also praised Suryavanshi’s batting performances and expressed confidence in a bright future for the young cricketer.

In a social media post, he wrote that when legendary cricketers such as Sachin Tendulkar, Sunil Gavaskar, Yuvraj Singh, Brian Lara, and Graeme Swann collectively suggest building India’s batting lineup around Vaibhav Suryavanshi, it goes beyond simple appreciation and reflects global recognition of exceptional talent

At the pre-match press conference, Iyer was asked about the rising buzz around Suryavanshi and whether the constant discussion around the youngster adds pressure on team selection decisions.

His response quickly grabbed headlines and went viral on social media. Iyer said:

“Honestly, I am not seeing anything like that. I don’t know about it at all. I don’t follow news or what’s happening on Instagram or social media. I haven’t heard anything like that.”

While he did not confirm whether Suryavanshi would feature in the playing XI for the opening T20I, Iyer acknowledged the youngster’s talent and said he is a promising player who will perform whenever given a chance. He also refrained from revealing the final team combination, stating that it would give the opposition an advantage.

‘Need to back experienced players’

Iyer also stressed the importance of supporting senior players who have delivered for India in major tournaments.

“Each individual playing in the team has performed, it’s not like one individual is performing. We’ve to build security and back our players at the same time, so they can gain confidence. Players who won us the last WC have a fair idea on how to play the format, they’ve been main pillars in T20s, so you need to back them,” he added.
