UP Lekhpals to Hold Regular Office Hours at Gram Secretariats From July 1
The Uttar Pradesh government has announced a major initiative to make revenue-related services more accessible and efficient for rural residents. Beginning July 1, Lekhpals will maintain regular office hours at Gram Secretariats across the state, ensuring villagers can access essential services closer to home.
The decision has been taken in line with Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath's vision of strengthening transparency, accountability, and doorstep delivery of government services in rural areas.

The Uttar Pradesh Revenue Board has instructed all District Magistrates to prepare attendance rosters for Lekhpals and implement the new arrangement from July 1.
Revenue Board Commissioner and Secretary Kanchan Verma said the initiative is aimed at improving governance and making public services more accessible at the village level.

She noted that Gram Secretariats were established to bring multiple government services under one roof. While officials from various departments are already posted there, the regular presence of Lekhpals will further strengthen service delivery, particularly for revenue-related matters.
Easier Access to Revenue Services
Gram Secretariats currently provide several online services through Panchayat Assistants, including:

- Domicile certificates
- Status certificates
- Certified copies of Khatauni (land records)
- Several other citizen-centric services
Since Lekhpals play a key role in verifying and processing these applications, their regular presence is expected to speed up approvals and reduce delays.
The move is also expected to save villagers repeated trips to tehsil offices, making government services more convenient and accessible.
Lekhpals Perform Multiple Administrative Duties
Apart from issuing revenue-related certificates, Lekhpals handle a wide range of administrative responsibilities. These include inheritance (Varasat) cases, implementation of the SVAMITVA Yojana, verification under the PM Kisan Samman Nidhi, disaster relief and rehabilitation work, settlement of land disputes, agricultural and population censuses, crop surveys, reporting natural disasters, investigating illegal encroachments, mining-related verification, Public Distribution System (PDS) verification, and inspections of paddy and wheat procurement centres.

Until now, there was no fixed arrangement for Lekhpals to be available at the Gram Panchayat level. As a result, villagers often had to visit tehsil offices or search for the concerned official at different locations, leading to unnecessary delays and additional travel expenses.
