A Delhi resident turned the tables on a scammer by using ChatGPT to create a fake payment link that captured the fraudster’s GPS location and front-camera photo. The man shared the entire incident in a Reddit post that has since gone viral. The episode began when he received a Facebook message from someone pretending to be his college senior, an IAS officer. The impersonator claimed that a CRPF officer friend was being transferred and was selling premium appliances and furniture at throwaway prices. The man grew suspicious because his real senior already had his personal number. After checking with him and confirming it was a scam, he decided to trap the fraudster. When the scammer later contacted him from another number using an army profile picture and sent a QR code for payment, the Delhi man pretended he couldn’t scan it.Instead, he used ChatGPT to generate code for a simple tracking webpage capable of accessing the user's GPS location and taking a picture using their device's front camera. After hosting the link, he sent it to the scammer under the pretext of “faster payment verification”.Driven by greed, the scammer clicked on it — instantly revealing his exact coordinates, IP address, and a clear selfie. The Delhi man then sent the scammer his own photo and location, shocking him. In panic, the scammer sent multiple messages apologising, pleading, and promising never to scam again. The Reddit post, titled Used ChatGPT to locate a scammer and made him beg me, included screenshots of the exchange. The man wrote: “Scammer tried running an Army transfer/cheap goods scam while impersonating a college senior, an IAS officer. Instead of paying, I used ChatGPT to quickly code a geolocation/front-camera capture link, tricked him into clicking it, and scared plus forced him to turn down the operation immediately by sending him his own photo and coordinates.”The post received massive praise. One user commented, “Mad respect. I am going to use this. Infact make this open source. Host it somewhere so that we can do it too.”Another wrote, “AI used for the right reasons. Good work!”A third added, “I think there is more to this than simply asking ChatGPT to write code. Maybe someone with your IT background could handle it. The creators of ChatGPT likely implemented limits on its capabilities. Without these restrictions, it would be too easy for someone to trick a non-IT person into revealing sensitive information such as geolocation or access to the front camera.”
