Achal Kumar Joti appointed new CEC

New Delhi: Election Commissioner Achal Kumar Joti was today appointed as the  new the Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) of the country. He will succeed Nasim Zaidi, who retires tomorrow. Mr Joti will take over as the CEC on July 6, an order issued by the law ministry said.

Mr Joti, who is a former Chief Secretary of Gujarat, was appointed as the Election Commissioner on May 7, 2015. He retired as Gujarat Chief Secretary in 2013, when Prime Minister Narendra Modi was Chief Minister of the State. Born on January 23, 1953, Joti, a 1975-batch IAS officer, will be the CEC till January 17 next year. (UNI)
