How Did This House Survive Nepal’s Devastating Flash Flood? Expert Explains

A sudden flash flood in Nepal on Wednesday caused widespread destruction, washing away villages, bridges, vehicles and buildings. More than 700 people have reportedly died, while hundreds remain missing.

The floodwaters and debris surged with such force that entire settlements and critical infrastructure were swept away. Videos and pictures circulating on social media show the scale of the devastation, with bridges and buildings being carried away by the raging water.

Amid the destruction, however, one house has caught everyone's attention. The turquoise-coloured home remained standing despite the powerful floodwaters surrounding it. An expert has now explained three key engineering factors that may have helped the house survive.

The House That Stood Amid the Raging Flood

The house is located in a Nepali village near the Tibet border, which was severely affected by the flash flood on August 26.

As floodwaters surged through the area on Wednesday morning, much of the village was swept away. But a video from the disaster shows the turquoise house still standing as the raging river flows around it.

People can even be seen on the fourth floor, while nearby houses and vehicles are swept away by the powerful current.

The sight has raised questions about how the structure managed to withstand such extreme conditions. Netizens say the engineer who designed the house deserve an award.

Engineer and Sleepy Classes IAS co-founder Shekhar Dutt explained that the house's structural design may have played a crucial role.

According to him, such buildings typically have a structural frame consisting of a plinth, columns and beams. In Nepal, these are commonly referred to as pillar houses.

Strong Columns and Beams Helped Support the Structure

Dutt explained that the columns or pillars are among the most critical components of such a structure.

During severe floods, however, heavy debris carried by the water can strike and damage ground-floor pillars, potentially causing a building to collapse. This is where the strength and interconnectedness of the beam-column framework becomes important.

The columns are connected to the beams, creating a cage-like structural framework. Even if one column suffers damage, the interconnected beam-column system can potentially continue to distribute and carry the load, helping prevent an immediate collapse.

Strong Foundation Reduced the Risk of Erosion

The strength of the house's plinth or foundation was another important factor.

Fast-moving floodwater can scour and erode the soil beneath and around a building. If the foundation is weak or exposed, this erosion can undermine the structure and eventually cause it to fail.

Dutt explained that a raised and properly connected plinth can reduce the impact of erosion and provide greater protection against the force and friction created by debris-filled floodwater.

The Flow of Water Also Played a Role

While the structural design may have helped the house survive, Dutt pointed out that circumstances also worked in its favour.

The floodwater appears to have flowed around the house rather than directly through its interior. This meant the building was not subjected to the full force of the water inside the structure.

Therefore, the house's survival was likely the result of a combination of structural strength, a solid foundation and the direction of the floodwater.
