Jio IPO Opens with a Bang: 100% Subscribed in Just 100 Minutes
Reliance Industries-backed Jio Platforms Ltd's ₹30,213-crore initial public offering (IPO) was fully subscribed within just 100 minutes of opening on Wednesday, setting a record for the fastest subscription among India's mega IPOs. Institutional investors led the early surge in demand for what is set to become the country's largest-ever public offering.
According to stock exchange data, investors had placed bids for 28.31 crore shares against the 19.75 crore shares on offer by 12:33 pm, taking the overall subscription to 1.43 times. The IPO will remain open for subscription until October 23.
Institutional Investors Drive Early Demand
Qualified institutional buyers (QIBs) emerged as the strongest contributors to the IPO's early response. Their reserved portion was subscribed 4.13 times, with bids received for 20.23 crore shares against 4.90 crore shares available.
Domestic financial institutions, including banks and insurance companies, bid for 13.40 crore shares, while foreign institutional investors sought 5.94 crore shares.
Demand from other investor categories was comparatively moderate. The portion reserved for non-institutional investors was subscribed 0.57 times, while retail investors placed bids for 3.74 crore shares against 8.50 crore shares reserved for them, translating into a subscription rate of 0.44 times.
The employee quota was subscribed 0.95 times, while the portion reserved for existing shareholders received bids equivalent to 0.82 times the shares on offer.
Jio IPO Sets a New Benchmark Among Large Issues
The speed of Jio's IPO subscription puts it ahead of several other major Indian public offerings.
Bajaj Housing Finance's IPO was fully subscribed by 2 pm on its opening day, while LG Electronics India's public issue achieved full subscription by the end of its first day in 2025.
Hyundai Motor India's ₹27,870-crore IPO, which currently holds the record for the country's largest public offering, had attracted bids for just 18 per cent of the shares on offer by the end of its first day in 2024.
Jio's IPO also differs from the Hyundai Motor India and LG Electronics India offerings, which were entirely offers for sale by existing shareholders. Jio is issuing up to 27 crore fresh shares, meaning the proceeds from that portion will go directly to the company rather than to shareholders selling their stakes.
Jio Platforms IPO Price and Valuation
The IPO has a price band of ₹1,065 to ₹1,119 per share. At the upper end of the range, Jio Platforms would be valued at approximately $108 billion.
The offering is poised to surpass Hyundai Motor India's record, marking a significant milestone for the telecom and digital services business controlled by billionaire Mukesh Ambani through Reliance Industries Ltd.
The strong response from institutional investors follows substantial demand during the anchor-investor allocation. On Monday, Jio allotted shares worth approximately ₹8,110 crore to 212 anchor investors at ₹1,119 per share.
According to people familiar with the matter, bids for the anchor allocation exceeded ₹2.5 lakh crore, representing demand of more than 30 times the shares available.
Telecom Giant Eyes Growth Beyond Connectivity
The strong institutional interest reflects investor appetite for Jio's extensive telecom customer base and its expansion plans across digital services, cloud computing and artificial intelligence.
Jio had 533.3 million customers, according to figures cited by its Managing Director, Akash Ambani. He has positioned the company's network infrastructure and technology platforms as the foundation for growth beyond conventional telecom connectivity.
The IPO will offer investors an opportunity to assess Jio not only as India's largest telecom operator but also as a broader technology platform with ambitions in enterprise services, cloud computing and AI.
