Double rainbow over palace shortly after Queen Elizabeth's demise 'mesmerizing' (VIDEOS)
London: A double rainbow that appeared over the Buckingham Palace minutes after Queen Elizabeth II's death was announced and the public gathered outside to pay their respects, have left many across the globe mesmerized.
Social media has been flooded by the pictures of the rainbows that people among the thousand-strong crowd outside the Palace gates in central London took and shared.
The unusual phenomenon appeared in the sky as the clouds cleared after downpours across the London on Thursday afternoon.
Crowds began to arrive after the palace announced the Queen was under medical supervision, and continued to grow after the news of her demise spread Thursday.
As the flag over Windsor Castle was slowly lowered to half mast after the death the rainbow emerged over the late monarch’s residence.
To some, the long arc of the rainbow was a reminder of the queen's lasting legacy, they said.
Some described it as : There is sadness in the air but magic in the skies.
The first rainbow was spotted next to Windsor Castle, the Queen's residence in the English county of Berkshire. And right next to it was another big rainbow.
A Twitter user shared: "While we are on visiting The Windsor Castle my wife and I looked up to the sky and there was a double rainbow not to realize that Queen is on the process of departing this world and the double rainbow was happening at the same time in the Buckingham palace(sic)."
The National Weather Service here said a double rainbow occurs when there are two refractions of light within the water droplets at different angles, the media reports said. (UNI)
