Who Is Mojtaba Khamenei? Iran’s New Supreme Leader

Mojtaba Khamenei
Conflicting reports have surfaced over the selection of Iran’s next Supreme Leader following the death of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. While Iran International claimed that Mojtaba Khamenei — the late leader’s son — has been elected by the powerful Assembly of Experts, senior cleric Ahmad Khatami said Iran has only finalized potential candidates and is close to announcing a decision.

Speaking to the Mehr News Agency, Khatami stated, “The leadership options have been determined, and we are close to electing a supreme leader.” Iranian media reports indicate that deliberations are being handled by the Assembly of Experts, the constitutional body responsible for appointing and supervising the Supreme Leader.

Leadership Transition After Khamenei’s Death

Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, 85, had led the Islamic Republic since 1989, making him one of the region’s longest-serving heads of state. His tenure spanned decades of tensions with the United States, regional conflicts, international sanctions, and contentious nuclear negotiations.

Following his death in strikes targeting his residential compound in Tehran on February 28, Iran formed a temporary three-member Leadership Council to oversee state affairs. The council includes Ayatollah Alireza Arafi, President Masoud Pezeshkian, and Chief Justice Gholamhossein Mohseni Ejei, and will remain in place until a permanent successor is chosen.

About Mojtaba Khamenei

Mojtaba Khamenei has never held elected office but has long been viewed as an influential figure within Iran’s conservative establishment. Over the years, he has reportedly maintained strong ties with senior clerics in Qom and elements within the security apparatus, particularly the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC).

Though largely operating behind the scenes, he has been considered a potential successor for years. If confirmed as Supreme Leader, he would assume sweeping constitutional authority over Iran’s armed forces, judiciary, state broadcasting, and strategic policymaking — including nuclear and foreign affairs.

Regional Tensions Escalate

The leadership transition comes amid heightened regional instability. Strikes under the codename “Operation Epic Fury” reportedly targeted multiple locations across Iran, triggering retaliatory missile launches by Tehran toward US and allied interests in the Gulf.

US President Donald Trump signaled a hardened stance, saying it was “too late” for negotiations to avert conflict, while Israel intensified military operations across the region. The situation remains fluid, with Iran’s political institutions facing a critical test during this volatile period.

As the Assembly of Experts moves closer to announcing its final decision, attention remains fixed on whether Mojtaba Khamenei will formally assume one of the most powerful and consequential roles in the Islamic Republic.
