ECI Publishes UP Draft Electoral Rolls, 2.89 Crore Voters Deleted Under SIR
The Election Commission of India (ECI) on Tuesday published the draft electoral rolls of Uttar Pradesh under the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) exercise, leading to the deletion of around 2.89 crore (28.9 million) names from the voters’ list.

With this revision, the total number of voters in the state has dropped to 12.56 crore from the earlier 15.44 crore, reflecting a reduction of nearly 18.7 per cent. Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) Navdeep Rinwa said the rationalisation of polling stations—reducing the voter cap per booth from 1,500 to 1,200—has resulted in the addition of 15,030 new polling booths across the state.

As a result, the total number of polling stations in Uttar Pradesh will rise from 1,62,486 to 1,77,516. The ECI had approved this proposal on December 23 for all 403 Assembly constituencies across 75 districts in the state.

According to official data, the number of “uncollectible” voters stood at 2.96 crore as of December 11, when the second round of enumeration concluded. This figure was revised down to 2.89 crore following the completion of the third round of enumeration on December 26.

Of the deleted names, around 1.29 crore voters (8.40 per cent) were classified as permanently shifted, 46 lakh (2.99 per cent) as deceased, 25.4 lakh (1.65 per cent) as duplicate entries, and 79.5 lakh (5.15 per cent) as untraceable. Additionally, 7.74 lakh voters (0.50 per cent) failed to return enumeration forms despite collecting them from booth-level officers.
