Strong winds bring relief as Delhi AQI improves to ‘poor
Strong surface winds improved Delhi’s air quality on Wednesday, with the air quality index (AQI) slipping into the ‘poor’ category from ‘very poor’ a day earlier.At 9 am on Wednesday, the city’s AQI stood at 260, down from 336 on Tuesday, according to data from the Sameer app.
Experts attributed the improvement to strong surface winds over the past 24 hours, with gusts reaching up to 30 kmph, which helped disperse pollutants near the surface.
Delhi also recorded a rise in minimum temperatures, easing the winter chill. Safdarjung, the city’s base weather station, reported a minimum temperature of 12.6 degrees Celsius, an increase of 4.3 degrees Celsius over the previous 24 hours. According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), this was 4.2 degrees above normal for this time of the year.
The IMD has forecast that temperatures are likely to fall by 4–6 degrees Celsius over the next three days, followed by a rise of 5–7 degrees Celsius thereafter.
