Severe cyclonic storm Murasu is likely to make landfall along the south Andhra Pradesh coast late Monday night or in the early hours of Tuesday, bringing strong winds of up to 120 kmph, extremely heavy rainfall and the possibility of storm surges in low-lying coastal areas, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said on Monday.

According to the IMD, the cyclone is expected to cross the coast between 11.30 pm on November 2 and 4 am on November 3. Wind speeds are likely to remain between 100 and 110 kmph, with gusts reaching 120 kmph.

In an update shared on X, the weather department said the storm was moving towards the Andhra Pradesh coast and was likely to intensify its impact along the coastal belt.

At 5.30 am on Monday, Cyclone Murasu was centred over the west-central and adjoining southwest Bay of Bengal, near latitude 13.9°N and longitude 81.8°E.

The system had moved west-northwestwards at a speed of 25 kmph during the preceding six hours.

At the time, the cyclone was located approximately 200 km east-northeast of Chennai, 210 km east-southeast of Nellore, 270 km south-southeast of Machilipatnam, 220 km east-southeast of Kavali and 260 km southeast of Ongole.

The IMD said Murasu was very likely to continue moving northwestwards before crossing the south Andhra Pradesh coast as a severe cyclonic storm.

Residents in coastal and low-lying areas are likely to face challenging weather conditions due to intense rainfall, powerful winds and the possibility of storm surges.
