Ruturaj Gaikwad Reacts to MS Dhoni’s Future After CSK Exit

MS Dhoni
Chennai Super Kings captain Ruturaj Gaikwad refused to speculate on Mahendra Singh Dhoni’s future in the IPL following CSK’s elimination from the 2026 season after a heavy defeat against Gujarat Titans in Ahmedabad.

The loss marked the end of a disappointing campaign for Chennai Super Kings, who suffered their eighth defeat of the season. However, even after the team’s exit, the biggest talking point remained Dhoni’s future and whether the legendary cricketer will return next year.

For the first time in the history of the IPL, Dhoni did not play a single match during the season, leading to widespread speculation about a possible retirement. Yet Gaikwad offered no clear indication regarding the former India captain’s plans.

“You and I will get to know it next year,” Gaikwad said when asked about Dhoni’s future after the match.

The response reflected the mystery that has surrounded Dhoni’s career decisions over the years, with even teammates often unaware of his long-term plans.

Despite Dhoni’s reduced role in recent seasons, Gaikwad admitted that the veteran’s absence was strongly felt by the team. He highlighted Dhoni’s experience and ability to influence games in pressure situations.

“It’s a hard miss for us. He can come in during the late overs and change the game just by being at the crease. Never know about next season, but really happy with the group of players we have,” Gaikwad said.

CSK’s campaign officially ended after they were crushed by Gujarat Titans by 89 runs at the Narendra Modi Stadium. Gujarat posted a massive 229/4 before bowling Chennai out for 140 in just 13.4 overs.

The defeat not only ended Chennai’s playoff hopes but also intensified discussions about what could be next for Dhoni, whose future continues to remain uncertain heading into the next IPL season.
