WTC Final 2027: How Many Tests Must India Win to Qualify?

Indian Test Team
With 15 of the 27 series in the current World Test Championship (WTC) cycle still to be played, Test cricket is set to take centre stage in the coming months as teams battle for a place in the WTC Final, scheduled to be played at The Oval from June 9 to 13, 2027.

India face a challenging road ahead. Based on the points percentage required to remain in contention, the team will need a strong finish across its remaining nine Tests.

In the previous two WTC cycles, three of the four finalists had a points percentage of more than 65%. India were the exception in 2023, reaching the final with a points percentage of 58.8%. In the 2025 final, both finalists had more than 67% of the available points.

India’s Remaining Tests

Sri Lanka (Away) 2 Tests
New Zealand (Away) 2 Tests
Australia (Home) 5 Tests
India’s 2-0 home series loss to South Africa last year has left them with little room for error. To reach a 60% points percentage, India need 78 more points from their remaining nine Tests. That would mean either six wins and two draws (80 points) or seven wins (84 points).

Five of those nine Tests will be against Australia. India have traditionally enjoyed a strong home record against Australia, winning their last five home series against them since 2008 by a combined match record of 12-2.

However, India’s recent home form is a concern. They suffered a 3-0 series defeat against New Zealand and subsequently lost 2-0 to South Africa. As a result, India will need a significant improvement when Australia arrive for the Border-Gavaskar Trophy. ALSO READ: IND vs SL: Sai Sudharsan Ruled Out of Sri Lanka Tests, Sarfaraz Khan Replaces Him

How Many Wins Does India Need?

In the previous WTC cycle, the two finalists finished with points percentages of 69.44% for South Africa and 67.54% for Australia.

If India win seven of their remaining nine Tests and lose two, their points percentage would rise to around 62.96%. An eight-win, one-loss record would take India to approximately 68.52%, putting them in a much stronger position to qualify.

This makes India's remaining nine Tests extremely important. The team has very little margin for error if it wants to secure a place in the 2027 WTC Final.

New Zealand’s Win Over England Makes India’s Task Tougher

India’s qualification scenario has also been affected by New Zealand’s recent performance. A 2-1 or 3-0 series loss for New Zealand against England would have worked in India’s favour, but New Zealand instead defeated England 2-1, strengthening their own position in the WTC race.

The qualification battle is currently shaping up as a three-way contest involving Australia, South Africa and New Zealand, with India also needing to remain firmly in contention.

Of India’s nine remaining Tests, the two away matches against New Zealand could prove particularly challenging. The other seven Tests — two against Sri Lanka and five at home against Australia — could provide India with opportunities to accumulate crucial points.

With the WTC Final qualification race becoming increasingly competitive, India will need to turn their remaining Tests into a highly productive campaign. Seven wins would significantly improve their position, while eight wins could put them in a strong position to challenge for a place in the final.
