UP farmers benefited from record wheat procurement under MSP
The system of wheat procurement at the Minimum Support Price (MSP) in Uttar Pradesh has played a pivotal role in strengthening the economic condition of farmers over the past nine years. Under the leadership of Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, the state government has ensured that farmers receive a fair price for their produce on time by making the procurement process transparent, technology-driven, and farmer-friendly. Between the Rabi marketing years 2017-18 and 2025-26, 244.26 lakh metric tonnes of wheat were procured from approximately 51,70,117 farmers, with payments totaling ₹45,935.46 crore transferred directly to their bank accounts.
**Wheat Procurement Exceeding Set Targets**
The Food and Civil Supplies Department reported that wheat procurement in the state surpassed the set targets. In the 2018-19 season, 52.92 lakh metric tonnes of wheat were procured against a target of 50 lakh metric tonnes, representing 105.84% of the target; payments amounting to Rs 9,231.99 crore were made to over 11.27 lakh farmers during this period. Similarly, in 2021-22, 56.41 lakh metric tonnes of wheat were procured, and payments totaling Rs 11,141.19 crore were made to more than 13.01 lakh farmers. Thanks to the timely payment system, farmers received the value of their produce directly into their bank accounts without delay, enabling them to meet their financial needs on time and facilitating reinvestment in agriculture.
**5,847 Procurement Centers Established Across the State**
The procurement system was brought closer to villages and towns through the establishment of 5,847 procurement centers across the state. This eliminated the need for farmers to travel long distances to sell their produce and reduced their dependence on middlemen. Measures such as online registration, digital verification, and timely payment systems have made the entire process simpler and more reliable.
**Transparent System Boosts Farmers' Confidence**
The MSP procurement system has evolved beyond mere crop purchasing to become a robust means of ensuring the economic security of farmers. The use of digital technology has enhanced transparency in the procurement process, while direct bank transfers have virtually eliminated the role of middlemen. The government aims to ensure that every eligible farmer in the state benefits from the MSP. To this end, officials have been instructed to ensure adherence to prescribed standards at procurement centers, facilitate the prompt resolution of grievances, and make the procurement process even more effective.
