In a Saree and Barefoot, This 47-Year-Old Mother Ran Marathon for Her Daughter’s Fees—and Won Rs.3000
For 47-year-old Ramabai Ranveer, the marathon in Ambajogai was never just a race. It was a mother’s run for her daughter’s future. With the hope of using the prize money to help pay her daughter’s school fees, Ramabai stepped into the race despite having no professional running gear. Wearing a simple saree and slippers, she competed against younger participants in sports shoes and track suits — and eventually emerged as the winner, taking home Rs 3,000.
Her Goal Was Simple: Help Her Daughter Study
Ramabai joined the ‘Amrit Daud’ organised at Kholeshwar Educational Complex as part of its ‘Amrit Mahotsav’ celebrations.
She may have entered the race like any other participant, but she had a deeply personal reason for wanting to win. The prize money could help ease the burden of her daughter’s education.
For Ramabai, every step was therefore connected to one goal — helping her daughter continue her studies.
When Her Slippers Became a Hurdle, She Took Them Off
The race soon became physically challenging.
As Ramabai began running, her slippers repeatedly slipped, making it difficult for her to maintain her pace. But instead of allowing the problem to stop her, she simply took them off, held them in her hands and continued running barefoot.
She ran along the uneven road in her saree, navigating stones and other obstacles along the way.
What she lacked in running shoes and athletic clothing, she made up for with determination. Step by step, she continued pushing forward.
A Mother in a Saree Outran the Competition
Ramabai eventually moved ahead of several younger runners who had entered the race equipped with proper sports shoes and running clothes.
When she crossed the finish line as the winner, her victory left spectators and organisers visibly moved.
The race began at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Chowk and ended at Bhagyanagar Chowk, with a large number of local youngsters participating.
But among all the runners, it was Ramabai’s journey that captured attention — a mother running not for medals or recognition, but for her child.
Her Rs 3,000 Prize Has a Bigger Meaning
After winning the race, Ramabai said she would use the Rs 3,000 prize money towards her daughter’s education.
The amount may seem modest, but for Ramabai it represents something far more valuable — a contribution towards her daughter’s dreams.
Her story is a reminder that a parent’s love can turn even the smallest opportunity into a reason to keep moving forward. Ramabai did not have expensive running shoes, a track suit or the advantages of a professional athlete.
She had a pair of slippers that she eventually had to remove, and a powerful reason to keep running.
