An eight-year-old boy lost vision in one eye after a toy found inside a snack packet allegedly exploded in Odisha’s Balangir district, officials said.
The incident took place on Sunday evening in the Patnagarh area under the jurisdiction of Titilagarh police station. The victim, identified as Ankesh Harpal, a Class III student from Shagadghat village, had purchased a Rs 5 packet of ‘Lighthouse’ corn puffs from a local shop.

According to reports, after eating the snack, the child threw the small toy that came inside the packet into a fire. The toy reportedly exploded moments later, with the impact striking Ankesh directly in the eye.
He was immediately taken to Titilagarh hospital, where doctors confirmed that the explosion had completely ruptured his eyeball, resulting in permanent loss of vision in that eye.

Following the incident, Ankesh’s parents filed a written complaint at the Titilagarh police station, alleging that the toy included in the snack packet was highly dangerous. They have demanded strict action against the manufacturer and an immediate ban on the product.
Police said a case has been registered and a detailed investigation into the matter is underway.
