Bengal Rape-Murder Case: Main Accused Killed in Encounter During Crime Scene Reconstruction

Baruipur rape murder case
The investigation into the alleged gang rape and murder of a 12-year-old girl in West Bengal's Baruipur took a dramatic turn early Wednesday after the prime accused was killed in an encounter after he tried to "escape from police custody" during a crime scene reconstruction exercise.

Meanwhile, investigators arrested a fourth suspect, further advancing the probe.

According to police, the main accused, Prabhas Mondal, was taken to the Suryapur area around 12:45 am to help investigators recreate the sequence of events linked to the crime. Senior police officers accompanied him as part of the investigation.

Police alleged that during the reconstruction, Mondal snatched a firearm from a police officer and attempted to escape. Officers tried to stop him, but he allegedly opened fire. The police then retaliated, critically injuring him.

Mondal was rushed to Baruipur Sub-Divisional Hospital, where doctors declared him dead. Security was tightened around the hospital, with central forces deployed to prevent any law-and-order issues.

The body of the 12-year-old victim was recovered from a pond in the Suryapur area on Sunday. Police suspect the girl was sexually assaulted before being murdered. The incident sparked widespread public outrage, with residents demanding swift justice and strict punishment for those involved.

Mondal was the first suspect arrested after local residents allegedly caught him and handed him over to the police. Investigators later examined CCTV footage that reportedly showed the victim with Mondal shortly before she disappeared on Saturday evening. The footage became a key piece of evidence in the case. ALSO READ: Telangana SHOCKER! Woman Kills Husband By Injecting Toilet Cleaner To Him Through Cannula

Meanwhile, police have arrested a fourth accused, identified as Kabir Molla, during a joint operation conducted by the Special Task Force (STF), Baruipur Sub-Divisional Operations Group (SOG), and district police.

Before Molla's arrest, three people — Prabhas Mondal, Anand Sardar and Dibakar Sardar — had already been taken into custody in connection with the case.

The latest developments came after West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendhu Adhikari visited Baruipur on Tuesday to review the investigation. He held a meeting with senior police officials and reiterated the government's zero-tolerance policy against crimes involving women and children.
