Why Are Suicide Cases Rising in Indore? NCRB Data Reveals a Disturbing Trend

Indore suicide cases
Indore is often celebrated for its vibrant culture, warm hospitality, and carefree spirit. From its famous poha-jalebi breakfasts to lively conversations over tea, the city is known for its positive energy and strong sense of community. Yet behind this cheerful image lies a troubling reality—an increasing number of people are ending their lives, raising concerns among mental health experts and policymakers alike.

Recent data suggests that suicide cases have surged across Madhya Pradesh, with Indore emerging as one of the most affected cities. While the trend is visible across the state, the situation in Indore has become particularly alarming.

Madhya Pradesh Among Top Three States in Suicide Cases

According to the latest National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) report, Madhya Pradesh ranks among the top three states in India for suicide deaths. The figures reveal that an average of 42 people die by suicide every day in the state.

In 2024 alone, 15,491 people reportedly died by suicide in Madhya Pradesh. Even more concerning is the city's suicide rate. Indore recorded a suicide rate of 34.6, making it the fourth-highest among Indian cities, while Bhopal ranked seventh with a rate of 28.4.

Indore Witnesses Sharp Rise in Cases

Reports indicate that suicide cases in Indore increased by nearly 30 percent over the past year. More than 50 suicide cases are being reported every month, with incidents cutting across age groups, professions, and social backgrounds.

Mental health advocates have also pointed out that Madhya Pradesh's proposed State Mental Health Policy, first introduced in 2019, is yet to be implemented.

Key Statistics from Madhya Pradesh

According to NCRB's Accidental Deaths and Suicides Report:

Housewives: 2,296 suicide deaths
Government employees: 164 suicide deaths
Students: 1,447 suicide deaths
Farmers: 7.9% of total suicide deaths

The report also highlights that Madhya Pradesh accounts for nearly 10% of all student suicides in India. In 2024, 716 male students and 731 female students died by suicide in the state.

Experts Point to Growing Mental Health Challenges

Senior psychiatrist Dr. Satyakant Trivedi of Bhopal says the rise in suicides reflects broader social and psychological changes rather than isolated personal failures.

According to him, people today have more ways to communicate than ever before, yet many feel emotionally disconnected. Constant comparisons on social media, pressure to succeed, unstable relationships, financial uncertainty, and increasing loneliness are taking a significant toll on mental well-being.

Depression, Anxiety, Addiction Among Major Risk Factors

Mental health experts caution against linking suicide to a single cause. In most cases, multiple factors contribute simultaneously, including:
  • Depression and anxiety disorders
  • Substance abuse and addiction
  • Personality-related difficulties
  • Family conflicts and relationship stress
  • Lack of support during emotional crises
  • Academic and professional pressure
The Long-Term Solution: Building Stress-Coping Skills

Experts believe suicide prevention requires more than crisis intervention. One of the most effective long-term strategies is helping people develop resilience and stress-management skills.

While challenges such as failure, rejection, financial hardship, and relationship problems cannot be completely eliminated, individuals can be taught healthier ways to cope with them. Mental health professionals argue that schools and colleges should place greater emphasis on emotional intelligence, problem-solving abilities, stress management, and seeking help when needed.

Creating a culture that values emotional resilience and mental well-being, they say, is essential for reducing suicide rates in the long run.

Warning Signs That Should Not Be Ignored

Experts advise families and friends to stay alert if someone displays the following signs:
  • Talking about suicide or death
  • Excessive anxiety, fear, or panic
  • Expressing a lack of purpose in life
  • Increased anger or irritability
  • Giving away valued personal belongings
  • Increased use of alcohol or drugs
  • Social withdrawal and isolation
  • Spending excessive time alone
  • Sharing details about personal finances, bank accounts, or important documents unexpectedly
Early recognition and timely support can play a critical role in preventing tragedies.
