UP government intensifies crackdown on illegal mining with round-the-clock digital surveillance
The Uttar Pradesh government has stepped up its efforts to curb illegal mining and the unauthorized transportation of minerals by strengthening the technology-driven Integrated Mining Surveillance System (IMSS). The advanced monitoring mechanism operates around the clock, improving transparency, safeguarding government revenue and ensuring stricter enforcement of mining regulations.
According to Mala Srivastava, Secretary and Director of the Uttar Pradesh Geology and Mining Department, the system incorporates geo-fencing technology, camera-equipped weighbridges, radio frequency identification (RFID) mine tags installed on transport vehicles, and unmanned checkpoints powered by the Internet of Things (IoT) and artificial intelligence (AI).
All of these technologies are linked to a central command centre in Lucknow, which monitors mining-related activities across the state in real time.
The department has also introduced a decision-support system that enables authorities to issue electronic notices immediately after identifying illegal activities. Officials believe that the initiative has accelerated the enforcement process while improving transparency and efficiency.
Srivastava said that 62 automated checkpoints are currently operational throughout the state, while two additional checkpoints are under construction. Surveillance capabilities have also been enhanced through the installation of 75 RFID readers and the deployment of the M-Check mobile application. More than 1.53 lakh vehicles have so far been fitted with RFID mine tags, allowing authorities to monitor the transportation of minerals digitally.
The Integrated Mining Surveillance System was introduced under the Uttar Pradesh Mining Policy 2017. Government data show that, as of July 16, 2026, more than 2.41 lakh electronic notices had been issued through the platform.
Authorities have assessed penalties amounting to more than Rs.998 crore through these notices, of which over Rs.756 crore has already been recovered.
Officials say the technology-based surveillance network has significantly strengthened the state's ability to tackle illegal mining activities while contributing to higher revenue collection.
