"Only Way to Do Justice": Rajamouli Explains Why Baahubali Is Expanding Into Animation

Baahubali: The Eternal War
Filmmaker S. S. Rajamouli has shared why the Baahubali franchise is making the transition from live-action cinema to animation. During a presentation at the 2026 Annecy Animation Film Festival, the director unveiled a work-in-progress preview of Baahubali: The Eternal War and spoke about the creative vision behind the upcoming project.

The Baahubali series, which includes Baahubali: The Beginning (2015) and Baahubali: The Conclusion (2017), became one of India's most successful film franchises, earning worldwide recognition and reaching audiences across several languages. The new animated film aims to expand the universe with a fresh storytelling format while continuing the saga.

Rajamouli revealed that while developing the original films, the team created a much larger fictional world than what eventually appeared on screen.

Rajamouli said, “We started writing so much about it, and in the process of creating those worlds and creating those characters, we created many instances which were as dramatic or more dramatic than the scenes in the film itself.”

He also highlighted animation as the ideal medium to bring those untold stories to life.

Rajamouli further said, “Indian mythology is so rich in its vivid descriptions about characters of other worlds. Animation is the only place where you can do justice to that description.”

The filmmaker praised director Ishan Shukla, saying he believed Shukla was the right person to lead the franchise into its next chapter through animation.

Baahubali: The Eternal War is being developed as a two-part animated feature directed by Ishan Shukla. The teaser for the first installment has already been released, offering fans a glimpse of the new visual style.

The film is expected to hit theatres in 2027, continuing the legacy of the blockbuster franchise in an entirely new format.
