Nag Panchami 2026: Avoid These 10 Mistakes or Invite Bad Luck
Nag Panchami 2026 will be observed on August 17. The festival is dedicated to the worship of Nag Devta and holds special significance in Hindu traditions because of the association of snakes with Lord Shiva.
Across India, devotees follow various customs and rituals on Nag Panchami. At the same time, several traditional practices advise against certain activities on this day. Here are 10 things devotees are traditionally advised to avoid on Nag Panchami.
10 Things to Avoid on Nag Panchami
1. Do Not Harm or Kill Snakes
According to religious traditions, harming or killing a snake on Nag Panchami is considered inauspicious. Devotees are encouraged to respect and protect snakes and other living creatures.
2. Avoid Digging the Earth
Digging the ground is traditionally avoided on Nag Panchami, as it could unintentionally disturb snakes or damage their underground shelters.
3. Do Not Cut Green Leaves or Vegetables
Some traditions advise devotees to avoid cutting green leaves and vegetables on Nag Panchami as part of the day's observances.
4. Avoid Ploughing or Tilling Fields
Farmers traditionally refrain from ploughing or tilling agricultural land on this day. The practice is associated with preventing accidental harm to snakes or their burrows hidden beneath the soil.
5. Avoid Stitching With Needle and Thread
Stitching clothes or other materials with a needle and thread is also traditionally avoided on Nag Panchami.
6. Avoid Cooking in Iron Utensils
Some traditions recommend avoiding the use of iron utensils such as tawa and kadhai for cooking on Nag Panchami.
7. Offer Food Made From New Grain First
According to certain agricultural traditions, farmers do not consume newly harvested crops before offering roti made from the new grain to a snake mound, also known as a Sarp Gufa.
8. Worship Snake Idols or Mounds, Not Live Snakes
Devotees should perform Nag Panchami worship using snake idols, images or traditional snake mounds rather than attempting to worship live snakes.
9. Never Feed Milk to a Live Snake
Despite a common religious practice depicted during Nag Panchami, feeding milk to live snakes should be avoided. Snakes do not naturally consume milk, and attempting to feed them can be harmful or even fatal.
10. Do Not Worship Snakes Separately From Lord Shiva
According to traditional belief, snakes are revered as sacred ornaments associated with Lord Shiva. Therefore, Nag Devta worship is often performed alongside the worship of Lord Shiva rather than treating the snake deity as completely separate.
