Sunday Puja: Don’t Worship Surya Dev Alone—Pray to These 3 Deities Too for Prosperity
In Hindu tradition, each day of the week is associated with one or more deities. Sunday is primarily dedicated to Surya Dev, the Sun God, who is associated with health, vitality, confidence and inner strength. However, traditional beliefs also consider Sunday an auspicious day to worship Lord Vishnu, Goddess Durga and Lord Kaal Bhairav. Devotees believe that worshipping these deities with faith and following the prescribed rituals can bring positive energy, stability and protection while helping overcome obstacles in life.
Here is how devotees can worship these deities on Sunday.
Why Is Sunday Considered Auspicious?
Sunday is dedicated to Surya Dev, the visible form of divine energy, health, success, confidence, and vitality.
Many devotees observe fasts, offer prayers and perform charitable acts on Sundays. Worshipping other deities along with Surya Dev is believed to balance different aspects of life — nourishment, strength and protection.
Devotees can begin the day by waking up early, taking a bath and offering prayers with a calm and sattvic state of mind. Regular worship and devotion are traditionally believed to promote peace and positivity at home.
Worship Surya Dev for Energy and Vitality
According to Hindu scriptures and tradition, the Sun is considered a deity that can be seen directly. On Sunday morning, devotees may take a bath and wear clean clothes, with red being considered auspicious.
Offer arghya to the Sun using clean water in a copper vessel. A few drops of Ganga water may also be added according to personal tradition.
While offering water, devotees can chant:
"Om Ghrini Suryaya Namah."
Regularly offering arghya to Surya Dev is traditionally believed to promote physical and mental vitality and help begin the day with confidence and positive energy.
Worship Lord Vishnu for Peace and Prosperity
Sunday is also considered a favourable day to worship Lord Vishnu, the preserver of the universe.
After bathing, devotees can light a ghee diya before the deity and apply a tilak of yellow sandalwood. During the puja, chant:
"Om Namo Bhagavate Vasudevaya."
According to traditional belief, worshipping Lord Vishnu brings stability, peace and prosperity into life. Devotees also associate his worship with the blessings of Goddess Lakshmi.
Offering yellow clothes, Tulsi leaves and sattvic offerings is considered especially auspicious.
Worship Goddess Durga to Overcome Difficulties
Those seeking strength, peace and protection from difficulties may worship Goddess Durga on Sunday.
Light a ghee diya before the Goddess and offer red clothes, sindoor, red flowers, akshat (rice), fruits and sweets.
Devotees can chant the following Durga mantra:
"Sarva Mangala Mangalye, Shive Sarvartha Sadhike,
Sharanye Tryambake Gauri, Narayani Namostute."
According to traditional belief, Goddess Durga's worship helps dispel negativity, strengthen courage and create a sense of protection within the family. Devotees believe that sincere prayer also provides mental strength during challenging times.
Worship Kaal Bhairav for Protection
Lord Kaal Bhairav is traditionally worshipped for protection from fear, negativity and obstacles. Sunday is considered an auspicious day by some devotees for his worship.
Offer flowers, betel leaves, black sesame seeds, urad dal and coconut oil as part of the puja, according to one's tradition.
Light incense and camphor and chant:
"Om Kaal Bhairavaya Namah."
According to religious belief, worshipping Kaal Bhairav can help devotees overcome obstacles and reduce fear. His blessings are traditionally associated with courage, protection and inner strength. ALSO READ: Never Buy These Items on Sunday; Prosperity and Money May Drift Away
