Kartik Month 2026: 10 Things You Must Do and Avoid to Please Goddess Lakshmi
The month of Kartik is considered one of the holiest and most auspicious months in Sanatan Dharma. It is believed to bring spiritual benefits and attract the special blessings of Goddess Lakshmi, the deity of wealth and prosperity.
Kartik is also a period of seasonal transition, making it important to follow certain health and lifestyle practices along with religious traditions.
If you wish to receive the spiritual benefits associated with this sacred month, here are 10 important things you should do and avoid during Kartik Maas.
5 Things To Do During Kartik Month
1. Take an Early Morning Bath (Kartik Snan)
One of the most important rituals during Kartik Maas is taking a bath before sunrise. Devotees are advised to bathe in a holy river or pond. Those who cannot visit a sacred water body can add a few drops of Gangajal to their bathing water at home.
Early morning bathing is also traditionally associated with discipline and maintaining a healthy daily routine during the changing weather.
2. Light Diyas Every Day
Kartik is often called the month of lamps or Deep Daan. Lighting diyas is considered particularly auspicious during this period.
Devotees should light a ghee lamp every evening near the Tulsi plant, inside temples and at river ghats. According to religious beliefs, this practice helps remove negativity and invites the blessings of Goddess Lakshmi.
3. Worship Tulsi and Perform Parikrama
Tulsi worship holds special significance during Kartik Maas. Devotees are advised to offer prayers to Tulsi Mata every day.
In the evening, light a ghee diya near the Tulsi plant and perform a traditional parikrama (circumambulation) with devotion. This ritual is believed to bring happiness, prosperity and divine blessings to the household.
4. Engage in Charity and Donations
Donating to the needy is considered especially meritorious during Kartik month.
Devotees are encouraged to donate food grains and clothes and offer meals to underprivileged people and Brahmins. Such acts of charity are believed to bring spiritual merit and divine blessings.
5. Follow a Sattvic Lifestyle and Practise Self-Restraint
Devotees are advised to maintain a sattvic lifestyle throughout the month. This includes practising celibacy, keeping the mind peaceful, controlling desires and avoiding negative thoughts.
Maintaining discipline in daily activities, food habits and behaviour is also considered an important part of observing Kartik Maas.
5 Things Not to Do During Kartik Month
1. Avoid Eating Certain Pulses and Lentils
According to traditional religious practices, the consumption of certain pulses and lentils, including urad dal, moong dal, masoor dal and peas, is discouraged during Kartik month.
Light and easily digestible meals are also traditionally preferred during the early winter season as the weather begins to change.
2. Stay Away from Tamasic Food
Devotees observing Kartik Maas are advised to completely avoid tamasic food items such as meat, alcohol, onion and garlic.
Following a vegetarian and sattvic diet is considered beneficial for maintaining purity of mind and body during this sacred period.
3. Avoid Applying Oil to the Body
According to traditional religious beliefs, applying oil to the body should be avoided throughout Kartik month, with an exception on Narak Chaturdashi, also known as Chhoti Diwali.

Sleeping during the afternoon is traditionally discouraged during Kartik Maas.
Instead, devotees are encouraged to wake up early, meditate, remember God and spend time in prayers, chanting and other spiritual activities.
