Sarvapitru Amavasya 2026: Do These 4 Things for Ancestors’ Blessings

Sarvapitru Amavasya 2026
Sarvapitru Amavasya marks the final and one of the most significant days of the Shraddha period. On this day, Hindus traditionally perform rituals for all known and unknown ancestors, particularly those whose date of death is not known or whose Shraddha ceremony could not be performed for some reason.

According to religious beliefs, rituals performed with devotion on Sarvapitru Amavasya are believed to satisfy the ancestors, who in turn bless their descendants with happiness, prosperity and peace. Here are some of the important rituals traditionally associated with the day.

1. Perform Pind Daan, Tarpan and Ancestor Worship

Pind Daan and Moksha rituals: Pind Daan can be performed according to prescribed rituals at a sacred riverbank or at home. It is traditionally considered an important ritual for the spiritual liberation of departed ancestors.

Tarpan with sesame and water: Offer water mixed with kush grass and black sesame seeds while facing south. According to tradition, this ritual is performed to offer respect and nourishment to the ancestors.

Worship the Peepal tree: The Peepal tree is traditionally associated with ancestors. On this day, devotees may offer water at its roots, light incense and a lamp, and perform seven circumambulations.

Light an evening diya: In the evening, light a sesame-oil diya outside the main entrance of the house, facing south. According to religious belief, the lamp symbolically helps guide the ancestors back to their realm.

2. Perform Dhup, Offerings and Panch Bali

Offer jaggery and ghee: Around noon, a traditional ritual involves placing a mixture of jaggery and pure desi ghee on a smouldering cow-dung cake or sacred fire as an offering.

Offer food into the fire: Satvik food prepared at home may be offered into the sacred fire in remembrance of known and unknown ancestors.

Panch Bali: Traditional practices include setting aside portions of food for animals and birds. Offerings may be made to a cow, crow, dog and ants. Devotees may give green fodder and roti to a cow and offer suitable food to crows, dogs and ants.

3. Brahmin Bhoj and Charity

Invite Brahmins for a meal: According to family tradition and personal means, devotees may invite 1, 3, 5, 11 or 21 Brahmins for a meal.

Offer food and dakshina: Serve them a satvik meal and, according to one's capacity, offer clothes and dakshina while seeking their blessings.

Donate black sesame seeds: Black sesame has special significance in traditional Shraddha rituals. Donating black sesame is believed to help pacify Pitru Dosha.

Donate to the needy: People may also donate food, clothes, footwear, umbrellas, blankets, medicines, jaggery, salt, sesame, lamps or money to poor and needy people according to their means. ALSO READ: Sarva Pitru Amavasya 2025: Donate THESE Things According To Your Zodiac-Signs To Get Relief From Pitru Dosh

4. Recitation and Spiritual Practices

Read the Bhagavad Gita: Reciting or listening to Chapter 7 of the Shrimad Bhagavad Gita on Sarvapitru Amavasya is traditionally considered spiritually beneficial. Religious belief holds that such devotional practices bring peace to the departed ancestors and aid their spiritual liberation.

According to Hindu traditions, performing these rituals with sincerity, purity and devotion is believed to help alleviate Pitru Dosha and invite blessings of peace, prosperity and the wellbeing of the family.
