UP Governor Directs Colleges to Establish Anti-Conversion Cells
Uttar Pradesh Governor and Chancellor of state universities, Anandiben Patel, has issued a directive requiring all medical, dental, and higher educational institutions in the state to set up dedicated anti-conversion cells. The move aims to prevent alleged religious conversions through "inducement or mental pressure," officials said on Thursday.
The directive comes in the wake of reports of conversion-related incidents reportedly linked to King George's Medical University (KGMU) and Sanjay Gandhi Postgraduate Institute of Medical Sciences (SGPGIMS) in Lucknow. Following this, Atal Bihari Vajpayee Medical University instructed all its affiliated colleges on June 6 to implement the Governor's orders on a priority basis.

In a letter issued by the Governor's Secretariat on May 28, institutions were urged to ensure a "safe, secular, and academic environment" while remaining vigilant against any activities promoting forced or unethical conversions.

The directive clarified that any attempt to influence students through "fear, mental pressure, or unethical inducement" for illegal or forced conversion is "unacceptable and against the law."

Colleges have been advised to conduct awareness programs on the issue and report any suspicious activity immediately to the police and local administration.
